The area around Gudurae Village
is famous for both its beautiful scenery and many
historic monuments from the Baekje period (18
B.C.-A.D. 660). According to Samgungnyusa (Memorabilia
of the Three Kingdom), the kings of Baekje rested
on a flat rock by the Sajasu (today's Baengmagang
River)on their way to the state temple of Wangheungsa.
The rock would get warm when the king sat on it,
so it came to be called Jaondae, or the "Self-Heating
Boulder. " Wangheungsa was one of Baekjes
state temples. Erected in the early seventh century,
it was reputed for magnificent shrines as well
as for the superb scenery surrounding it. It was
located at the southern foot of Mt. Ulseongsan
across the Baengmagang River. Many historic Baekje
sites are found on both sides of the river. They
included the sites of such famous temples as Hoamasa
and Cheongnyongsa, the Busosanseong and Busanseong
Fortress and the Naseong town wall of Buyeo.
