This octagonal lantern is 293cm
high. The carved pattern on the lower pedestal
is of eight non-inverted petals. As is quite evident
in the pedestal, the lighting chamber, and the
roof, an octagonal shape is central to the design
of the piece. The octagonal roof stone, which
is capped with a bijou in the shape of a lotus
bud, is rather large compared to the rest of the
lantern, but the upward turn of the eaves does
help to visually reduce its heaviness. During
excavations of the area, two thin, round bronze
plates, now preserved at Muryangsa Temple, were
found beneath the lantern. One of the plates is
inscribed with a Bodhisattva and the other is
inscribed with a pattern design and has a knob
similar to the ones found on bronze mirrors.
