The Baekje Kingdom occupied the southern
corner of the peninsula of Korea. The people were northern
tribes who kept moving south to avoid Goguryeo and Chinese
domination. Baekje established its first capital south
of the Hangang River near present day Seoul, but later
moved to Gongju(475) and finally to Buyeo located along
the Geumgang River in 538. Baekje culture represents a
period of almost 700 years, from the founding until its
conquest by |
the allied forces of Silla and Tang China in 660 and was distinctly
different from that of Goguryeo or Silla. However, the 123 years
in which Buyeo was its capital was the most splendid and prosperous
period of the 700 years of Baekje, and this period still comes
vividly alive in every corner of present-day Buyeo. |
